What is a “True” Dual Exhaust System

What is a “True” Dual Exhaust System

Many vehicles come from the factory with “semi” or “fake” dual exhausts systems They typically utilize a dual in, single out muffler and incorporate a “Y pipe” to split the system into 2 outlets very near the end of the exhaust system. A street view of this type of exhaust setup would lead one to believe that the vehicle has true dual exhaust but in fact, it does not.

A true dual exhaust system would SEPARATELY utilize two exhaust manifolds or headers, 2 or more catalytic converters, 2 mufflers and 2 separate exhaust tail pipes. From a V6 or V8 engine, exhaust would then be fed from each bank of 4 or 6 cylinders through its own catalytic converter, its own muffler and its own tail pipe separately.

The separate exhaust pipes from a true dual exhaust might also be fed into and out of an X or H crossover pipe in order to balance exhaust pulses and provide a smoother exhaust flow from both sides. This setup would still be considered true dual exhaust.

What are the advantages of a true dual exhaust system?

In addition to the ability to customize exhaust sound, the biggest benefit of a dual exhaust system is to get the leftover exhaust gases out of the engine cylinders faster so that the next exchange can begin quicker. Basically, a dual exhaust system allows the engine to breathe better creating a more complete combustion cycle from the engine. It gets more exhaust our faster allowing the engine, which is basically an air pump, to then suck more air in faster creating more horsepower.

If your vehicle has 6 or 8 cylinders and a single exhaust system, all of the exhaust gases from all the cylinders are trying to leave through the same catalytic converter, muffler and tail pipe. Just as a large group of people trying to leave a building through the same door can create a bottleneck or traffic jam, single exhaust systems can create back pressure which can rob your vehicle of horsepower and gas mileage. A true dual exhaust system provides each head and exhaust manifold with its own separate exit allowing double the amount of exhaust to be forced out of the engine. As a result, you will likely notice an increase in horsepower.
